Help & Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about Voxtyper, in one place.
Does Voxtyper add punctuation automatically?
Yes. Voxtyper listens to the rhythm of your speech and inserts commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation points where they belong. You speak naturally, with normal pauses, and Voxtyper handles the punctuation. You never say "comma" or "period" out loud.
Does Voxtyper capitalize sentences and proper nouns automatically?
Yes. The start of every sentence is capitalized. The pronoun "I" is capitalized. Names of people, places, and most proper nouns are capitalized based on context. You do not need to say "capital" before a word.
Where does Voxtyper work?
Any text field in Chrome. Gmail, Google Docs, Notion, ChatGPT, X, LinkedIn, Slack web, Discord web, Reddit, your CMS, your customer support tool. If you can type in it, Voxtyper can dictate into it. It works in plain inputs, contentEditable surfaces, and canvas-based editors like Google Docs.
How is Voxtyper different from Google Docs dictation?
Three differences. First, Voxtyper inserts punctuation automatically. Google Docs requires you to say "comma" or "period" out loud. Second, Voxtyper capitalizes properly across sentences, names, and titles. Google Docs is inconsistent past sentence starts. Third, Voxtyper works in every web text field. Google Docs dictation only works in Google Docs and Slides.
How accurate is Voxtyper?
Voxtyper uses an industry-leading speech-to-text engine that performs strongly on conversational English, technical vocabulary, and accented speech. Accuracy is consistently higher than the built-in dictation in Google Docs and the macOS or Windows system tools. The free tier and the Unlimited tier use the same engine.
Is my audio stored?
No. Audio is sent to the transcription service, the text comes back, and the audio is discarded. We do not write audio to disk and do not retain it. The transcribed text is also not stored on our servers. It is returned to your browser and inserted into the field you focused. The only things we keep are your monthly quota count and, if you sign in, your email address.
Can I change the keyboard shortcut?
Yes. The default is Ctrl+Space to start and stop, Esc to cancel. You can rebind both from the Voxtyper settings page to any combination that fits your workflow. Map it to a single mouse button, foot pedal input, or any custom key.
Does it work for accented English?
The underlying speech recognition is trained on a broad range of English accents and handles most of them well. Heavy regional accents may need slightly clearer enunciation, but Voxtyper is meaningfully more accurate on accented speech than Google Docs dictation in our testing.
Does Voxtyper handle technical terms and jargon?
Yes. Medical terminology, legal language, software and product names, scientific vocabulary, and proper nouns are handled directly. Spell-out names and very recent product names may need a quick review.
What languages does Voxtyper support?
English is the primary supported language at launch. The underlying engine can transcribe many other languages, but those have not been tested end to end yet. We will add language selection to the settings page when broader support is ready.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The free tier gives you 20 minutes of dictation per month without an account, or 1 hour per month when you sign in. No credit card required, ever.
How much is the paid plan?
Unlimited dictation is $9 per month, billed through Stripe. Cancel anytime from inside the extension. You keep Unlimited access until the end of your billing cycle, then automatically revert to the free tier.
Will Voxtyper work for someone with chronic pain or RSI who cannot type comfortably?
Yes. Voxtyper is designed for one-handed operation. The keyboard shortcut can be remapped to a single mouse button, foot pedal input, or any custom key. The on-page indicator can also be clicked to start and stop. There is no typing required during normal use beyond the shortcut press.
Does Voxtyper rewrite my words like other "AI" tools?
No. Voxtyper transcribes what you said and adds punctuation and capitalization. It does not rewrite sentences, polish your phrasing, or "improve" your wording. Your voice stays yours. If you wanted a rewriter, you would buy a different product.
